Linda Liukas believes that a movement in technology is already happening and that we need to engage everyone -- especially the next generation -- to take part. She wants to create a more diverse and colourful world of technology, starting with the poetry of code.

Linda Liukas is a programmer, storyteller and illustrator. Her children's book, Hello Ruby, raised a total of $380,000 on Kickstarter. She founded Rails Girls, which has organized workshops in over 230 cities, teaching the basics of programming to more than 10,000 women. Linda worked at Codeacademy, which she left to write stories that teach children about software and programming. She won the 2013 Ruby Hero prize and was named the Digital Champion of Finland by the EU Commissioner for Digital Agenda.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

7:40 How I got a job

Just a few months ago, I had no idea what coding even was. All I knew was that it had something to do with typing complicated stuff on a computer. I got the idea of learning how to code after I graduated with an Economics Degree from a university in London. Economics is a highly valued degree, most people who do it in top universities like mine become investment bankers and stuff like that. I did an internship at a big bank too, but I hated it. So I started looking into what career path could give me a lot of money, and also a great work-life balance. So I discovered, software engineering.

I learned that to become a software engineer, all you really need is to know how to code. So I typed on Google, how to learn to code, and I ended up starting with Python for Everybody and the Odin Project, these are both free resources, the former introduced me to one of the most popular programming languages of today, Python, and the latter familiarized me with the basics of Web Development using HTML, CSS and Javascript.

At this point my goal was just to get a vague sense of the vast world of programming, to start understanding what was out there, how the different pieces like front-end and backend development fit together and what they mean at a high level. Going through the Odin Project I got a basic sense for many interesting topics such as how the internet works and what it actually means to open a web page on your browser.

I will also tell you how I got my first job in tech as a Software Engineer..

Ex-Google TechLead presents a holistic, integrated, principle-centered approach to programming. The first 100 people to go to http://blinkist.com/techlead are going to get unlimited access for 1 week to try it out. Youโ€™ll also get 25% off if you want the full membership.

Over the years, you find that programming is a field littered with pitfalls. I've seen so many health problems in my colleagues. And mental burnout, low productivity, loss of focus, and getting lost in the weeds. For those lucky enough to have landed a job in programming, they are not out of the woods just yet. Learn my top 7 habits for being an effective coding machine.

I like the word habit here. A habit is a fundamental change in behavior and mindset. I think that's the key -- any short-term "tip" or "trick" can only yield short-term results. It is the long-lasting value of good habits that will power you through decades of coding. How many people do you know who have been coding for a decade and still manage to stay happy and healthy? Yep, just one (me).

Let me know your top habits in the comments below.

I had to start over with what I know about programming today, this is how I would do it. Because of the abundant amount of information out there, it is easy to get caught up in analysis paralysis when trying to figure out where to start your coding career. Hopefully, by the end of this video, you will have an idea of the process of going from zero to enough programming knowledge to get your first software development job.

?โ€โฌ›?โ€โฌ›About me
========================
Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)
